Braking: Check for unfamiliar brakes

Although the placement of brakes on most bikes are conventional, but some manufacturers switch brake levers for front and rear brakes, so before you get on the bike, make sure you know which lever activates which brakes. Most of the manufacturers in the United Kingdom put front brakes at the right lever, whereas manufacturers based in European countries and America put front brakes at the left lever. So before you take your bike to the trail, make sure you are aware of the correct position of the brake levers. You do not want to get to know the correct location of the brake levers while riding down a hill at super high speeds.

You should not keep more than two fingers on the brake levers. Preferably, you should place only the index fingers on the brake levers. This is to make sure that you don’t accidentally put too much pressure on the brakes. See when you are riding downhill at high speeds, putting on too much of brakes is going to make the rear tire of your bike grip the ground too hard. At such high speeds, the momentum of the bike will make you crash head first in the ground, which can cause some serious damage to you and to your bike.

Also, by keeping minimal fingers on the brake levers, more fingers will grip handlebar, thus giving you better control over the mountain bike.

Setup brake levers of your mountain bike

The brake levers on your bike should be set up in such a fashion that when you press them with full intensity, they should not clench your fingers within them and the handlebar. If your fingers are getting clenched inside, unscrew the brake levers and reposition them away from the handlebar so to give more room to your fingers. By repositioning the brake levers, you will be able to put on brakes with sufficient amount of force without having to worry about your fingers getting hurt.
